CORE PROGRAM
Year 1: Drawing
During the first year, students focus on learning how to draw by acquiring strong observational skills and a thorough process. Mornings are dedicated to Plaster casts studies, while afternoons focus on figure drawings from life. We will be using two measuring methods: sight-size and comparative measurement. In the sculpture class students will learn to work in the round, creating three dimensional forms that deepen their understanding of sculptural structure and spatial relationships.
Year 2: Painting
The second year is designed to help students transition from drawing to painting. To make this shift as intuitive as possible, students will move from graphite to charcoal—introducing a more painterly approach.
Painting begins with cast studies and figures from life where students are focusing on form by painting in grisaille and familiarizing themselves with oil painting. Afterwards, students will learn color theory through lectures, demos, and studies. As a result students will learn how to color mix effectively, how to apply paint boldly, and model subtle forms.
Year 3: Advanced Painting
In the third year, students will be building upon their foundation in the 1st and 2nd year to explore Still life Composition and Advanced Sculpture.
Students will be working in an extended color palette during a 4 week figure pose and a Still Life. They will have their own individual spaces for their personal compositions (still life). This will be complimented with more fast sketches such as the Alla Prima Portraits on Fridays to develop efficient problem solving.
In Advanced Sculpture students will deepen their anatomical understanding of the figure.
